Miloš the Siberian cat from Canada

Today we are interviewing Miloš the Siberian kitty from Ontario, Canada and his Human Mom Lisa. Follow Miloš’ adventures at @miloshthesiberian !

What is your name?
My name is Lisa Vespasiano

What is the name of your cat?
My Siberian Forest cat is named Miloš (Pronounced MEE-losh), the son of Parnishka, of Manchzhury Cattery, Russia & Garmoshka of Fialka Cattery, Russia.

Although he is a Russian cat, I chose a Serbian name which translates to “pleasant” and it suits him purrfectly. I call him, “Meesh” for short which also translates into “Kitty” in Italian.

It is often used as a slang, pet name for cats. My family is Italian-Canadian. Miloš is a multicultural cat! Lol.

How old is Miloš?
Miloš is almost 4 months of age.

What country and city are you from?
I live in Ontario, Canada!

How did you decide to have a Siberian cat and why?
Miloš is my second Siberian cat. My first Siberian, Vasya became part of my family in 2005 but he was diagnosed with cancer and diabetes and unfortunately I lost him in April of this year.

I have severe allergies towards cats and even had to have allergy shots as a child. I was not able to have another cat until my late twenties when I found out about Siberian cats in 2005. After doing some research online and allergy testing with a breeder I was able to enjoy the company of my feline furiend!

I am slightly allergic to Miloš but do not suffer from the chronic sinus infections I used to get.

Siberians are known for their hypoallergenic superpowers simply because they produce a different type of protein in their saliva compared to other breeds. Fun fact huh?!

What is Miloš’ favorite food?
Miloš’ diet is 85% wet food, Instinct by Nature’s Variety. He only nibbles on a bit of the Kitten dry formula overnight. It is a high protein, grain-free diet that supports his nutritional needs and keeps him well hydrated.

There are many alternative flavours that he will be trying as he ages. It is fairly expensive but either you pay for high-quality food or high veterinary bills in the end so it’s your choice. Health and happiness are at the forefront!

Any recommendations on food for other Siberian cat owners?
Maintain a high-quality, primarily wet, grain-free diet with occasional dry food and limit treats. Some may choose a raw diet but I do not feel comfortable with that.

Cats are true carnivores and should NEVER be placed on a vegetarian diet.

They will become extremely ill fairly quick if they are not fed a proper diet which includes meat, organ meat, taurine, etc. Talk to your vet about diets and what seems appropriate for your pet based on their age, breed, etc.

What are Miloš’ favorite toys or games?
Siberians are very intelligent and curious, show them something once and they do not forget. Miloš loves playing fetch with his Ellen mouse or crinkle ball. I throw and he brings it back.

He’s also crazy about his Mini teaser wand and Turbo scratcher!

What does your cat love doing most?
Miloš loves attention so time spent with family either playing, watching movies, watching Instagram videos 😻 or napping right on his Humom makes him happiest.

Is there a funny story you could tell us about your Siberian?
The first time he saw his reflection in the mirror he thought another cat was following him. Please see attached video for some super cuteness 😻

What do you love most about your Siberian?

I love the characteristic round features of the Siberian – rounded eyes, head, paws. He has lots of toe/ear fluff, as well as a triple-thick, water repellent soft coat. Miloš also talks to me quite a bit; more like a chirping really.

He is a cuddly boy, always happy and a lap cat. He is going to be a very loyal, gentle giant as he ages.

What are the good sides of having a Siberian cat?
The Siberian is a gentle, loyal, affectionate, stoic cat. A cat with hypoallergenic tendencies and is also highly skillful and intelligent. They are not usually a noisy cat but are vocal and will talk to you.

They are not as vocal however as a Bengal or Siamese and even though they are agile athletes they are not crazy wild like some Bengals and Savannah’s.

What are some downsides to having a Siberian cat?
They love to jump, the higher the better! Warning – Never let them loose outside unsupervised because they will jump the fence in a second. Lol. It’s always best to keep them safe but do let them explore.

Does your kitty shed much and how do you deal with it?
Siberians usually shed in clumps, the hair is very soft almost like a Chinchilla but if you roll it in your hands it amazingly resembles a ball of cotton or yarn. I do not find that they shed like the Domestic Shorthair cats do with lots of coarse hairs flying around.

They do require a brushing but not as much as a Persian or Himalayan. Miloš’ coat will thicken up for Winter and he will turn into a Snow Bunny but will lose it come Spring.

Do you travel with your cat?

Not yet, he is still very young. What do you do when you need to go on vacation? I will rely on family to take care of him if it is somewhere he can not come.

Would you recommend other people to have a Siberian cat, why or why not?
I literally would never have another breed of cat in my life, primarily due to allergies but also for all of the reasons I mentioned above. They are phenomenal pets!
