Sniss, the Siberian cat from Norway

Sniss, the Siberian cat from Norway

Today we are interviewing Sniss, the Siberian cat from Norway, and his human mom Ferny! It was Sniss’s Birthday  just the other day! Happy Birthday Sniss 😉 Follow Sniss on his instagram account at @snissthecat.

What is the name of your cat? Why did you choose that name?
My cat’s name is Sniss. Sniss is a local word in Bergen and can be translated into “barely touching”. The name was chosen long time before we found the cat, and we pictured a red tabby cat with white markings – and then we found him!

How old is Sniss?
Sniss is one year today! He was born June 25, 2017.

What country and city are you from?
Bergen, Norway.

How did you decide to have a Siberian cat and why?
Mainly because we (Sniss’ owners) have a lot of pet allergies in our families, and Sniss’ allergic grandma has 2 Siberians so we had good experiences with the breed 🙂

What is Sniss’s favourite food? Any recommendations on food for other Siberian cat owners?
Sniss loves all kinds of food. He just loves food in general. He is desperate whenever food drops to the floor, and acts as a vacuum cleaner! He even “vacuums” oats, salad, corn, and chips.

However, his favourites are yogurt (natural) and Hill’s a/d (which makes him absolutely crazy). Sniss’ owner is a veterinarian, and recommends Hill’s Vet Essentials Young Adult for young, neutered cats.

What are Sniss’s favourite toys or games?
When Sniss was little he loved playing hide and seek with his parents. He also loved making his ears all flat and hide in the bed so that he could jump out and scare his owners (scary I know, but he was very cute doing this).

He loves catching bugs and flies, and keeps the house very clean for insects that way 😉 After he started being able to go outside he’s too smart for toys, and think we look stupid trying to play with him.

What does Sniss love doing most?
Sniss LOVES cuddles, and he loves routines. What he appreciates the most throughout the day is 1) Cuddles when his owners get up in the morning, 2) Breakfast (sitting on this owner’s lap waiting for yogurt), and 3) cuddling when his owners get home from work.

Sniss is an extremely social cat, and always follows his owners wherever they go. Oh, and he loves being groomed!

Is there a funny story you could tell us about your Siberian?
Sniss prefers to drink running (tap) water. He also knows how to do a real high five (with both hands!).

What do you love most about your Siberian?
The fact that he has such a strong personality! He talks ALL the time, replies and understands. He’s like a tiny human, only cuter! He’s stubborn, but yet he is a fast learner as long as you motivate.

He is also quite unusual regarding cuddles: He lies down on your lap several times daily just to get attention and be close to you. Most cat owners I know have to fight for the cuddles 😉

What are the good sides of having a Siberian cat?
Siberian cats are the BEST companions <3 You’ll have a friend for life. And they give the softest cuddles. And they’re so cute when they sleep. And they’re smart, too! What are some downsides to having a Siberian cat?

Be sure to pick a serious breeder in order to prevent health issues within this wonderful breed! Every Siberian owner holds this responsibility, and we have to be aware that all breeds (cats or dogs) are more likely to develop serious health disorders compared to mixed breeds.

Does Sniss shed much and how do you deal with it?
I don’t think Sniss sheds more than expected, but shedding can be helped with quality food and grooming. Sniss is groomed every day, and he really enjoys it! It’s important to make your cat used to this as a kitten.

On days he is not groomed, he sheds a lot more. Besides, grooming is important to prevent hairballs.

Do you travel with your cat? What do you do when you need to go on vacation? (Pet sitter? Cat hotel? 🙂
We made Sniss get used to his cage when he was little, and we took him on short car rides. Now he’s so used to car rides that there’s really no problem bringing him anywhere. He just goes to sleep.

We drove 5 hrs when we took him on Christmas vacation, and he did excellent. Sniss is so social that he does better going along with his parents rather than staying home with a pet sitter. However I think most cats (especially outdoor cats) do better having a pet sitter at their house, and it’s important to know your cat’s preference, not yours.

Would you recommend other people to have a Siberian cat, why or why not?
YES! You’ll get a soft friend for the rest of its life. My best advice is: if you’re getting a Siberian, you might as well get 2 🙂 The only reason not to choose a Siberian is that there are lots of homeless mixed breeds out there 🙁

If you’re not allergic, pick a cat who really need you instead of buying a pretty cat that most likely will get a home anyway. AND: never get a pet unless you can afford it. Make sure you get a health insurance for your Siberian 🙂
